Fripperies: administrivia, grammar and money
First, welcome to the new home of this blog at wordofthelaird.com, a product of more sweat than CSS/PHP knowledge. It was made possible in large part by the kindness of random strangers who work with Wordpress for fun, as well as an un-random 3L who helped with Photoshopping and advice.
Second, hoo boy, am I going to enjoy Lawyers[’] Writing Wrongs, a blog dedicated to snarkiness about bad legal writing. (Hat tip to the California Blog of Appeal.) Note the way the apostrophe is handled. Love it.
Finally, I think we all know that some people go to law school just to make money. But the Wall Street Journal law blog found a survey saying the proportion of students motivated by money is quite high, and then goes there with an anecdote about some pretty crass behavior:
The fact that earning power drives people to law school isn’t news to the Law Blog. In our first-year torts class we sat next to a classmate who was obsessed with cataloging the things he was going to buy once he landed at a big firm. Instead of doing the negligence analysis he would write a dollar-figure next to each fact pattern, approximating how much he could extract from the defendant.
Wow. I’m sure the majority of students who said they were after money were just scared recent college grads. (Been there!) But people like this make me less sorry that it’s getting hard to find a well-paying job right out of law school.

I do the same thing with First Amendment cases, trying to figure out how much that cop in Milwaukee can pay to defend himself from a s.1985 lawsuit.
